Neuntöter

Description

Neuntöter, AKA the Red-backed Shrike, get's this fun German name from its murderous tendencies. The direct translation of Neuntöter is "Nine-Slayer". You see shrikes are predators, but unlike raptors, they lack the use of their feet to manipulate prey. Instead, they make use of any sharp protrusion available to them to impale their prey before picking it apart. Often building a collection of prey items on thorn bushes or wire fencing, it was said that they impale nine prey items before consuming them. And thus awarding them the chilling name, Nine-Slayer.
